Man survives being hit by semi along I-75

TAMPA - A Lutz man was recovering at Tampa General Hospital on Wednesday, following a three-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon that began when he walked into the path of a semitrailer truck heading south on Interstate 75 near Interstate 275.

Scott M. Weinberg, 27, was standing on the west shoulder of I-75 shortly before 4 p.m., said Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Trooper Larry Coggins. Weinberg's vehicle had broken down, and the hood was up. He walked into the southbound lanes and was hit by the semi traveling in the outside lane, according to an FHP report.

The truck driver, Rufus Bonner, 58, of Jacksonville, swerved to the left and collided with a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser. The impact sent the truck spinning, and the back of its tires collided with a 2003 Ford pickup.

Bonner and the drivers of the other vehicles were not injured. All were wearing seat belts.

Coggins said Weinberg's injuries were not life threatening. He was in fair condition Wednesday, said Tampa General spokesman John Dunn.

"That's pretty amazing," Coggins said, "considering he was hit by a semi."
