A good reason to attend school regularly just got better.

The Wheels for Attendance program is offering two more options this year to Citrus High, Crystal River High or Lecanto High School students who keep absences from school during the 2001-2002 school year down to a minimum: a Jeep Liberty, a Chrysler PT Cruiser, a Dodge Dakota Quad Cab or a Chevrolet Camaro.

The cash drawings at the end of each nine-week term will also increase. In past years the amount went from $25 at the end of the first term to $50, then $75 and finally an award of $100 at the end of the school year. This year each drawing will be $50 at the end of each term.

Also new this year is more incentive to keep students in school all year. Besides the drawing for a car or truck, four students will be awarded $1,000.

Here is the criteria for being included in these lucrative drawings: To be eligible, students can miss no more than four days of school the entire year. (Three unexcused tardies or unexcused early check-outs equal one absence.) More than four absences of the same block also disqualifies a student.

At the end of the year, a student who has had perfect attendance, will have his ar her name entered into a preliminary drawing eight times. A student who misses one day, will have four entries. Two absences will give a student three entries. A student who has missed three days will get two entries and students who miss four days will be entered in the drawing one time each.

Twenty percent of eligible students will be chosen in a preliminary drawing from each school. Those names will go into a final drawing for the four $1,000 cash prizes and the vehicle. These prizes will be awarded on May 21, 2002.

Wheels for Attendance is sponsored by Crystal Motor Car Company and Van Allen-Clifford Insurance.
