Peggy Mitchell Peterman, who retired in 1986, was a features reporter, columnist and member of the editorial board during her 31 years with the Times. Through her writing, she sought to bring people together by covering community issues important to everyone. She also mentored young black journalists at the Times and other papers. In 1989, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Black Journalists. She died in 2004.

What the winner receives:
$6,000, plus a paid summer internship at the St. Petersburg Times (FL)
