Hey girls and boys: It's about time we saw more Prince videos on YouTube
it's been more than a year since Prince passed, and it has been intriguing to see his musical legacy unfold. While alive, Prince and Warner Brothers kept a tight noose of his music and any YouTube postings of his videos were immediately taken down. However, now that a year has passed and without the greatest fan fare, the Prince Estate has been uploading his videos and releasing his music on Spotify. I think it's the right move as now we get to unearth some of his lost videos like Girls And Boys.
Prince produced so much music in the '80s that was impossible for radio or MTV to play it all. In 1986, he followed up the smash movie Purple Rain with Under The Cherry Moon. The movie was not as successful and while the Purple Rain soundtrack sold 13 million U.S. copies, the music to Under The Cherry Moon - released as the album Parade - only sold 1 million copies in the U.S. The first single off Parade was the iconic No. 1 song Kiss and was followed by Mountains. The third single in the U.S. was Anotherloverholenyohead with the B side being Girls And Boys. That single only reached No. 69 in the U.S.
With Prince making his directorial debut with Under The Cherry Moon, the video to Girls And Boys has the look from the movie with Prince reprising his role as gigolo Christopher Tracy trying to seduce the women of France alongside his movie brother "Tricky," played by Jerome Benton of The Time. The video includes all the members of his band The Revolution complete with mainstays like Wendy, Lisa and Dr. Fink. Also prominently featured is Susannah Melvoin, the twin sister of Wendy. In the video, it is Susannah who is Prince's love interest, which is not shocking as the two were engaged at the time. It was Susannah who provided the inspiration for Prince to write the No. 1 hit Nothing Compares 2 U.
The video for Girls and Boys ends on a curious and comical note with Jerome cracking himself up and Prince tries valiantly to keep from smiling as he exits the scene. Girls and Boys was awarded as an A-side single only in Europe, and it fared well reaching No. 11 on the U.K. singles charts.
