Karate Kid TV series to reunite Ralph Macchio, William Zabka

Thirty years later, we're about to see if the Karate Kid has any crane kick left in it. The Hollywood Reporter says a 10-episode TV series called Cobra Kai is coming to YouTube Red, and it will reunite stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka

Macchio played heroic Daniel-San against Zabka's villainous Johnny Lawrence in the first two Karate Kid movies in the '80s. The actors will reprise their roles in Cobra Kai, with down-and-out Johnny reopening the karate dojo. Meanwhile, Daniel LaRusso will be found still recovering from the loss of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi. The story will be set 30 years after the end of the All-Valley Karate Tournament, which served as the finale of the original 1984 movie.

Macchio and Zabka are set to co-exec produce, while Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine) and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold and Kumar) will handle the writing duties. The series apparently was the subject of a bidding war between many of the online streaming TV networks including Netflix and Hulu.

While the original movies focused more on Daniel-San, it's said this new series will be more 50-50 between Daniel and Johnny, hence the change in name from Karate Kid to Cobra Kai. Look for it to debut next year.
