Shopping Planner: Zine Fest, native plants, BoTiki fundraiser and more

Self-Published: Daddy Kool Zine Fest
If you’re not aware of what a zine is, it’s a self-published, minimagazine of original texts and/or artwork with a small circulation. They are often associated with the punk rock, DIY movement, and in the early years they were made on photocopiers and sometimes handwritten. They were really popular in the ’90s, especially with the Riot Grrl movement. With all the ’90s nostalgia these days, it’s really no surprise that zines are having a renaissance, enough to have a Zine Fest at Daddy Kool Records in St. Pete on Saturday. Local and national zine vendors will be there and you can check some of them out on Daddy Kool’s Facebook page, The organizer has mini-interviews with some of the vendors so you can get to know them a bit. Bonus: Most zines run just $2-$6 each! There will also be food trucks and FREE BEER from New Belgium Brewing Co. It’s free to attend, and runs from noon-6 p.m. at 666 Central Ave.

Flora-Da: Fall Native Plant Festival
It’s tricky to grow things in Florida, especially if you lack a green thumb. The folks at the Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society can help steer you in the right direction at their festival Saturday. Learn about the benefits and the different ways you can landscape with native plants and get garden inspiration and expert advice from the gardeners. They’ll give hourly talks on attracting butterflies and replacing high-maintenance turfgrass with native, easy-to-care-for ground covers. Of course, there will be a wide selection of plants for sale, and the experts will help you select the correct ones for your specific site conditions. The free event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wilcox Nursery,  12501 Indian Rocks Road, Largo.

Gulfport Gives Back: Fall Fashion Fundraiser
Fab boutique BoTiki will present its fashion show fundraiser 2-5 p.m. Saturday, at the shop, 3015 Beach Blvd. S in Gulfport. Models will be dressed in looks from a variety of brands that the boutique carries. They have recently started carrying the Spanish apparel brand Desigual, which is exciting because it’s a very beautiful line that isn’t carried many places locally. The show is a fundraiser to benefit the Michael J Yakes Foundation, which serves underprivileged children and seniors who live in Gulfport. The Gulfport staple O’Maddy’s will provide the hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, and there will be live sax music by Henry. BoTiki will have a silent auction. Tickets are $20 at, or at BoTiki and O’Maddy’s.
