Jim McElwain still mum on Florida Gators death threat details

Florida Gators coach Jim McElwain was asked again Wednesday about his remarks that death threats were made against people related to his football program.

And again, he declined to provide details but said he would "when it becomes unmanageable."

"I feel bad for sometimes being open and being honest, and yet at the same time, I've seen this movie," McElwain said during Wednesday's SEC coaches' teleconference. "I understand it. If it gets to a point, then we'll go from there."

McElwain brought up the threats, unprompted, during his weekly Monday news conference. He didn't share details with reporters, his administration or the University of Florida Police Department.

"We have not received anything at this time," UFPD public information officer Brad Barber said Wednesday morning.

Barber said UF police reached out to the University Athletic Association after McElwain's first comments to say that they were willing and able to assist in anything related to threats. The department has not increased its security around the program, Barber said.

The Gainesville Police Department says it has not received any reports about threats, either, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has not been contacted to assist in any relevant investigations.

Here's the full context for McElwain's remarks Wednesday. He was asked if he'd share any more details about the threats, or if he regretted mentioning them. His reply:

"I think one of the things, for those who know me and people that realize I'm a real passionate guy, and a guy, you know, there's obviously letting - exactly what I tell our people not to do is allow one or two misguided remarks, you know, get to ya. The care I have and passion for these players, this university, and the fact - we have an unbelievable fan base. It's great. There's passion. When you go into that Swamp, it's something special, and our guys feel it.

"Yeah, I do. I feel bad for sometimes being open and being honest, and yet at the same time, I've seen this movie. I understand it. If it gets to a point, then we'll go from there."

McElwain was asked, then, about sharing more details.

"When it becomes unmanageable, at that point. You know. Like I said, I've got a lot of care, and care for this program and these people. At the same time, allowing a couple things get to ya ... You know what? You can't do that. Ultimately that's the business we're in. You know what, we'll move forward and get ready to play this ball game."
