'Hot cops' from Florida go viral with Hurricane Irma selfie, now they're making a calendar

The Gainesville Police Department posted the selfie on its Facebook page.

The Gainesville Police Department posted the selfie on its Facebook page.

The night before Hurricane Irma was expected to affect their city, three Gainesville police officers snapped a quick selfie at the start of their shift. The photo made it to the Gainesville Police Department's Facebook page, and from there, the world.

"Officers Nordman, Hamill and Rengering...part of the night crew getting ready to do some work. #Irma," read the caption on the photo.

Hundreds of thousands of people have since shared it, and the comments are filled with compliments on the officers "hunky" looks.

"Never in my life have I ever wanted to drive 1200 miles just to run a stop sign," wrote one woman.

"I can't believe how many women are objectifying these poor, fine, young, strong, handsome, brave, sexy, delicious, virile, ovulation-inducing, mouth-watering, beefy..... I can't remember where I was going with this...," wrote another commenter.

And those are some of the tamer comments we can share here.

"So I was gonna say something inappropriate, then I checked the comments, it's been covered," someone else added, underscoring that point.

One of the top comments on the post, with more than 20,000 likes by Wednesday, was from a woman saying the officers should make a calendar for charity. "I'm pretty sure we can rebuild Texas and Florida," wrote Alaina Craven.

And it sounds like Craven is getting her wish. The Gainesville Police Department updated the original post with this:

1. We are dying with the comments. You've actually made our chief blush with some of them.

2. MRS. Nordman and MRS. Hamill have also enjoyed knowing how millions of women are going crazy over their husbands.

3. We can confirm that Officer Rengering (far right with the amazing hair) IS SINGLE.

4. On another note, Officer Rengering is being placed into Cougar Prey Protective Care, similar to the witness protection program for his safety.

5. Please do not call 9-1-1 and request this group respond to your "incident"

6. There WILL be a calendar.

Thank you all for the hilarious comments...they have brightened our time up here. As for the calendar, we are going to try and do something fairly quickly and funds raised will go to Hurricane Irma recovery here in Florida.

Not long after that, the Sarasota Police Department sent backup.

There has been a turn in this story.

The Gainesville Sun reported Thursday that the Gainesville Police Department is reviewing a complaint made against Officer Hamill.

The Sun said someone sent it captured Facebook posts in which Hamill makes jokes about Jewish people and recommends "the Hitler way" to deal with people who abuse government resources.

According to the Sun, "One screen shot is of an April 2013 post, in which Hamill writes: 'Who knew that reading jewish jokes before I go to bed would not only make me feel better about myself but also help me to sleep better as well. Here is one for everybody, 'What’s the difference between boy scouts and jews?' Anybody know? Well it is because 'Boy scouts come back from their camps.'"

The Sun reported that another screen shot shows a post from 2011 in which Hamill wrote, “so I find it funny that people will talk about how our government needs to do something about our economy and in reality it’s YOU who needs to stop taking advantage of our system and get a life and do something with your life. Gotta love reality when it hits you in the face. Stupid people annoy me. Put them in an oven and deal with them the Hitler way. Haha.”
