What to watch and listen to this week: Rabbits podcast, 'Downward Dog' on ABC
About 30 seconds into listening to Rabbits, I was hooked.
The new podcast from the Public Radio Alliance upends the traditional serial radio docudrama style with a story that sounds almost too real.
PRA producer Carly Parker is the voice of Rabbits, which chronicles her search for her missing friend, Yumiko.
Carly suspects Yumiko had been playing a mysterious alternate reality game (ARG) called Rabbits before she disappeared.
Now six episodes in, the series evolved from Carly solely searching for her friend to her diving deep into the mysteries surrounding this game and its possible keys to better understanding our universe. It turns out, Rabbits is much more than a high-stakes game. Carly finds out that Rabbits has almost ancient origins, and some people have gone insane or even died trying to uncover its truths.
As the description says, Rabbits truly is TV for your ears. It sports some serious Stranger Things and Dimension 404 vibes and waxes nostalgic while exploring a very futuristic way of playing video games. Carly even talks about Polybius, an arcade game with a creepy urban legend attached to it, the subject of an episode in Hulu's Dimension 404 series.
Rabbits has just enough unease to keep you on your toes and quite a bit of folkloric storytelling to keep you clicking "next episode." So R U Playing?
