Winner and loser of the week: Jude Law cast as young Dumbledore; United Airlines in PR nightmare

Winner: Jude Law. When it came to the casting of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, some Harry Potter fans were less than pleased to learn that Johnny Depp would play Gellert Grindelwald, the dark wizard who played a large role in the backstory of the Potter series.

With the criticism of Depp, it’s no wonder the folks over at Warner Bros. considered every major British actor for the role of young Dumbledore. According to Variety, the studio had in mind everyone from Christian Bale to Benedict Cumberbatch for the role.

But we can all breathe a sigh of relief because Dumbledore is in Jude Law’s talented hands. The two-time Academy Award nominee will fill the role of young Dumbledore, set long before he became the Hogwarts headmaster. Law will star alongside Depp, and fans of the series are already questioning if the two characters will share an on-screen romance in Fantastic Beasts 2.

For those not familiar with the books, the two wizards had a close bond, and Rowling later revealed that Dumbledore was gay.

“Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him,” Director David Yates said in a Variety interview. “I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.” We agree. And so did Twitter.

Loser: United. The airline has been in a bit of a PR nightmare over the past couple weeks, first for refusing to board two young girls for wearing leggings, and now for having a man forcibly dragged off a plane by police for not giving up his seat when the plane was overbooked.

The video of Dr. David Dao, 69, being dragged down the aisle of the plane sparked outrage across the country, with several United customers calling for a boycott of the airline.

In a press conference Thursday, the passenger’s lawyer,Thomas A. Demetrio, said his client suffered a broken nose, a concussion, two knocked-out teeth and sinus problems that may require reconstructive surgery.

“Are we going to just continue to be treated like cattle — bullied, rude treatment?” he asked.

What’s worse, is that the airline originally defended its actions, but only later issued an apology.

“This horrible situation has provided a harsh learning experience from which we will take immediate, concrete action,” the company said in a statement. “We have committed to our customers and our employees that we are going to fix what’s broken so this never happens again.”

But bad news comes in threes, and on Thursday United Airlines said a creature that “appeared to be a scorpion” fell from an overhead bin during a flight, stinging a man. How the "scorpion" got on the plane remains a mystery, but United said the passenger's injuries were not life-threatening. Not a good week for United. Scratch that, not a good month for United.
