Winner and loser of the week in Florida politics
Winner of the week
Philip Levine. There is little buzz so far among Democratic activists and political elites about the Miami Beach mayor flirting with a run for governor. But he’s already raised far more than any other Democrat in the mix, more than $4.5 million without a single fundraising reception. That automatically makes him a top contender that Gwen Graham best beware.
Loser of the week
State Rep. Kionne McGhee. It’s one thing not to field candidates in GOP strongholds. It’s another when Florida Democrats have no one to run in a special election for Florida House district in Orange County that Hillary Clinton won handily. McGhee, a Miami Democrat, is the incoming House minority leader who’s supposed to be in charge of recruiting and falsely claimed Democrats never gain Florida House seats in off-year elections -- see 2006). “This, my friends, is why Democrats are chronic losers in this state,” the Orlando Sentinel’s Scott Maxwell wrote.
