3 stage picks: 'Iphigenia in Aulis, 'Catch Me If You Can,' 'Sister Act'

Iphigenia is one of those figures from mythology whose name has come to mean something larger than itself, in her case a strong-willed woman willing to make a huge sacrifice, or some variation on that theme, and she has inspired everything from plays to ballets to operas to novels. Iphigenia in Aulis is a play by Euripides, and 18th century German composer C.W. Gluck drew upon that ancient Greek tragedy and a French drama by Racine for his opera, which is being staged this weekend by the enterprising New Century Opera Company at Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center. Phoenix Gayles plays Iphigenia, and Chris Romeo plays her betrothed, Achilles. Directed by Constantine Grame (who plays the piano score), this is an ambitious production, sung in English, with a large cast, chorus and ballet. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. $18, $22. (727) 942-5605;

Catch Me If You Can had only a short run on Broadway, but the musical about a con man has a pedigree. Adapted from the Leonardo DiCaprio movie, it boasts a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, whose credits include Hairspray, and a book by four-time Tony Award winner Terrence McNally. A tour of the show has performances at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater. $50-$70. (727) 791-7400; Local note: The cast includes Allyson Tolbert, a St. Petersburg native who graduated from the Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School and the University of Florida. She also was Miss Largo, Miss St. Petersburg and fourth runnerup in the Miss Florida pageant.

Another musical made from a movie is Sister Act, with Ta'Rea Campbell (The Book of Mormon) starring in the Whoopi Goldberg role of a nightclub singer who witnesses a murder and is put in a convent for protective custody. Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid) composed the music, with lyrics by Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid). Goldberg is a producer of the tour that comes to Tampa's Straz Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday and runs through Dec. 16. $46.50-$81.50. (813) 229-7827 or toll-free 1-800-955-1045;
