Plant QB Rex Culpepper tears ACL

Plant High coach Robert Weiner confirmed that quarterback Rex Culpepper, a Syracuse commit, tore his ACL Saturday at USF’s Sling N Shoot 7-on-7 tournament and is out for the season.

“Incredibly devastating,” Weiner said. “(Rex) is the most amazing kid and one of the hardest workers I have ever met. He does not deserve this.”

Culpepper will have surgery within the next 10 days, Weiner said. The injury is blow for the Panthers, who have state title aspirations.

Last season, Culpepper threw for 2,016 yards and 20 touchdowns. His stock continued to soar after a strong offseason and spring. Culpepper is rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports and was ranked as the No. 8 player overall in the Tampa Bay Times' HomeTeam 100.

Culpepper, whose dad, Brad, played six seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has 13 offers and committed to Syracuse in June.

Plant, meanwhile, has to search for a starting quarterback.

“We have some possibilities at who will play quarterback going forward,” Weiner said. “I’m just not sure yet (who will start).”
