Hillsborough County school notes

Garden Grant at HCC: The Hillsborough Community College (HCC) SouthShore Campus in Ruskin was recently awarded its first grant, a Community/School Garden Grant for $3,450 from the Florida Department of Agriculture.

Thanks to the can-do attitude and pro-active work of Phi Theta Kappa honor society vice president Karen Lewandowski and Professor Karen Boosinger, HCC-SouthShore students will soon begin growing hydroponic crops intended for sharing with the local migrant farm worker families.

"We plan to grow a wide variety of nutritionally dense specialty food crops in our hydroponic garden on campus," Lewandowski said. "These crops will meet the needs of families in our community who need food."

With help from local grower Hydro Harvest Farm and area charity Good Samaritan Mission, the HCC students and faculty involved in the project plan to make intelligent decisions based on growing season and the foods that migrant worker families will incorporate into meals.

With sustainability front of mind, the project will include expanding the current hydroponic garden on campus, incorporating different types of containers and recycling rain water.

After getting the project up and running, Lewandowski and the PTK group plan to step aside and let SouthShore students and faculty run it. Professors may incorporate the project into their curricula for earth sciences and other courses.

School ground breaking: Preschool children in hard hats and shovels will help break ground on construction of the new Primrose School of South Tampa on Dec. 5 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the school's location, 1700 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.

Students from the Primrose School of Tampa Palms will perform a musical tribute during the ceremony. City council representatives Harry Cohen, Lisa Montelione, Frank Reddick and Mike Suarez and representatives from the Primrose School Franchising Company in Acworth, Georgia, will also attend.

The new Primrose school will serve children ages six weeks to five years old, and will offer afterschool programs for students up to 10 years old. The school will open in August 2013.

Wine tasting: Fine Wine & Spirits Warehouse will host a wine tasting to benefit the St. Peter Claver Catholic School in Tampa on Dec. 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the home of Mike Kwasin, 3613 S Beach Drive, Tampa.
