National contest: The drug prevention campaign Red Ribbon Week is holding a contest to find a new slogan design for 2013.

The winning slogan will be used in schools and communities across the country in 2013. The winner will receive $500 worth of Red Ribbon Merchandise for his or her school, and will be recognized at the 2013 Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America Annual Leadership Forum.

Time is running out. Entries must be submitted by Monday. Email entries to redribbon@nfp.org, including the entrant's name, school, telephone number and email address. The winning design will be displayed on banners and signs. The contest is open to students in grades K-12.

Debate awards: The Jesuit Speech and Debate Team won three trophies and a gavel in the National Forensic League District Congress at Jesuit High School on Dec. 1. Freshman Jackson Moffett won first place as best legislator in his chamber of congressional debate. Junior Joonsung Suh and freshman Alexander Fiore won sixth place in their chambers. Junior Corey Weintraub won a gavel as presiding officer.

Weintraub, Fiore, Suh, sophomore Dean Lontoc and freshman Michael Lee qualified for Merit Degree membership in the National Forensic League.

Student work: More than two dozen Hillsborough County elementary school music students recorded original songs at Morrisound Recording in Tampa last month as part of the Young Song Writers Symposium, an annual collaboration between students and teachers in music composition and lyric writing. The students recorded their songs accompanied by musicians and teachers.

They performed their songs at a concert Nov. 30 at Orange Grove Middle Magnet School. The students participated in a two-month after-school songwriting workshop with district music teachers Daniel Shea and Sean Moats.

Parade participants: Three Academy of the Holy Names seniors and members of the Jaguarettes dance squad participated in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York last month. Annie Polo, Jane Lazzara and Demi Curbelo were part of the Varsity Spirit group, made up of more than 600 high school senior dancers and cheerleaders from across the country. They opened the parade with a pom-pom routine in Harold Square and walked with Santa. Members of the Jaguarettes squad have participated in the parade since 2004.

New partnership: The Monroe Middle School Global Leadership Academy was awarded a PASS grant at the school last week. The PASS grant is a three-year partnership involving Monroe Middle School administration, Hillsborough County Public Schools, MacDill Air Force Base leadership, Tampa Bay area business leaders and the Council for Educational Change to find new ways to meet the educational needs of military families and increase student achievement.
