Bass Pro sells Brandon property but isn't going anywhere

BRANDON — Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World has sold its property in eastern Hillsborough County, but has no plans to leave.

Bass Pro sold its store at 10501 Palm River Road to a subsidiary of the Starwood Property Trust on Sept. 29 for $28.6 million, according to Hillsborough County property records. At the same time, Starwood, which is based in Greenwich, Conn., also bought Bass Pro Shops in St. Lucie and Palm Bay.

"There are no changes for our customers, and we will continue operating in Tampa and throughout Florida as we have in the past," Bass Pro Group director of communications Jack Wlezien said in an email to the Tampa Bay Times. "Under this new agreement, we are simply a tenant with a long-term lease in this location."

Bass Pro opened its 130,000-square-foot Brandon store in July 2015. The store was built after the Hillsborough County Commission voted in 2012 to approve a $6.25 million road construction subsidy to bring the store to the Estuary shopping complex across from the Westfield Brandon mall. The center also is home to the area's first TopGolf, a sports entertainment complex, and the arcade-restaurant Dave & Busters, which opened last month.

Headquartered in Springfield, Mo., Bass Pro Shops in September acquired competitor Cabela's for a reported $4 billion .
