Final escort of Dunedin soldier comes through Tampa today

The official escort of Army Spc. Zachary L. Shannon will come through downtown Tampa this morning on its way to Palm Harbor.

Shannon, 21, of Dunedin, was killed last week in a helicopter crash near Kandahar, Afghanistan. His body will arrive at MacDill Air Force Base at 10:30 a.m. Monday. The escort route will leave the base about 11:15, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, and head north on Bayshore Boulevard, east on the Platt Street Bridge, north on Florida Avenue, east on Jackson Street, north on Jefferson Street, west on E Polk Street, and north on Ashley Drive to southbound Interstate 275.

The escort will then take U.S. 60 west to Clearwater. From there, the escort will travel north on McMullen-Booth Road, west on State Road 580, north on Pinehurst Road, east on Michigan Boulevard, north on County Road 1 and east on Curlew Road to Curlew Hills Memory Gardens, 1750 Curlew Road in Palm Harbor.

Zack Shannon's body is to arrive at MacDill Air Force Base at 10:30 a.m. today. After that, an honor guard will drive his body through Tampa, west on the Courtney Campbell Parkway, north on McMullen-Booth Road, west on State Road 580, north on Pinehurst Road in front of Dunedin High School, east on Michigan Boulevard and north on County Road 1 to Curlew Hills Memory Gardens. A crowd will gather outside the school, which the escort is expected to pass between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
