Bus driver in I-4 accident dies from medical condition

TAMPA — The driver of a church bus that caught fire last week after crashing into a wall on Interstate 4 has died, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver, Martin Rufus Silas Jr., died Friday from complications arising from a medical emergency he had just before losing control of the bus on Dec. 3, troopers said. The medical condition was not disclosed.

Silas, 78, of Seffner had no passengers on the bus at the time of the crash and suffered only minor injuries, troopers said.

The bus was owned by First Baptist Church of College Hill in Tampa.

The crash closed the eastbound lanes of I-4 from the Interstate 75 junction for two hours.
