Police identify Clearwater pedestrian killed in weekend crash

CLEARWATER — Police have identified the Clearwater pedestrian who was killed Saturday night while trying to walk across a busy section of Missouri Avenue.

Paul Francis Almeida, 57, was fatally injured when a southbound Toyota van struck him on the avenue just south of Turner Street, according to the Clearwater Police Department. The accident took place about 7:45 p.m.

Almeida was trying to cross to the west side of the street, police said. The driver said he saw Almeida in the roadway but was unable to avoid hitting him. Almeida was transported to Morton Plant Hospital, where he died, according to authorities.

Almeida has been arrested seven times in Pinellas County in the past five years, on charges ranging from drug possession to battery, according to Pinellas County Sheriff's Office records.
