New Port Richey caregiver accused of stealing jewelry

NEW PORT RICHEY

Caregiver accused of taking, pawning couple's jewelry

An in-home caretaker was arrested Tuesday after, deputies say, he stole thousands of dollars in jewelry and pawned it.

Between January and March, Peter Evan Weinstein, 29, took two gold necklaces, a diamond pendant, wedding ring and cellphone, totaling $2,700, a Pasco sheriff's report states. He had access to the house because he took care of an elderly couple, who have since died.

He pawned the stolen jewelry at Silver Dollar Pawn, 5607 State Road 54, on Jan. 3 and Jan. 7 and received $1,500 for it, the report states.

Weinstein, of 7815 Jenner Ave., was arrested on a charge of grand theft and two counts of dealing in stolen property. He remained Thursday in the Land O'Lakes jail in lieu of $22,000 bail.

In the arrest report, Weinstein lists his place of work as Right at Home Health Care in New Port Richey. Administrator Paul Lallanilla said Weinstein had worked there part-time in the past but was working independently when the jewelry thefts happened.

Lallanilla said his employees are subject to routine, unannounced inspections on the job.

"If they would have worked through us, it may have been different," he said. "We would have been supervising him."
