Police seeking driver who rammed officer's cruiser

ST. PETERSBURG — Authorities are still looking for the person who set off a police chase that resulted in an injury to an officer. Early Sunday morning, a person behind the wheel of a silver Kia intentionally swerved into oncoming traffic and rammed an officer searching for a stolen Cadillac in the area of Eighth Avenue S and 43rd Street S. That officer wasn't hurt, but police began pursuing the Kia. Officer Timothy Reyes was on his way to help when a vehicle pulled in front of him on 54th Avenue S at 19th Way S. Reyes swerved and struck a curb, which flipped the cruiser and sent it into a telephone pole and the metal fencing that surrounds Osprey Pointe Apartment Complex, police said. Reyes was hospitalized but returned to work Monday on light duty, police said. Police are still looking for the driver of the Kia and the stolen Cadillac, which was taken from a Chevron gas station at First Avenue S and 34th Street S. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (727) 893-7780.
