LARGO — An inmate at the Pinellas County Jail was pronounced dead Thursday in an apparent suicide, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Jail personnel found Dyer Kasakoff, 47, of St. Petersburg unresponsive in a shower stall Tuesday evening at the facility at 14400 49th St. N. He had a piece of fabric around his neck that was attached to a shower rod, investigators said.
Kasakoff was taken to Northside Hospital in St. Petersburg, where deputies said he was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon. He showed no other signs of injury, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Witnesses told detectives that days before he was found, they saw Kasakoff testing the weight limits of the shower rods. Kasakoff signed over power of attorney to a family member earlier Tuesday.
The Sheriff's Office said Kasakoff's death does not appear suspicious, but the Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. Kasakoff had been in jail since Sept. 29, held on charges of grand theft and possession of heroin.
