'Cavern' closes westbound lanes on E Fletcher Avenue in Hillsborough County

Westbound lanes of E Fletcher Avenue are closed near the Hillsborough River to repair what the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office terms a "cavern" that formed under the roadway.

Deputies say E Fletcher Avenue was shut down Tuesday from Interstate 75 to Telecom Parkway, and road work will extend into the evening.

The majority of the outside lane has eroded under the bridge over the Hillsborough River, deputies said.

Detours are in place, and motorists should use alternate routes.

This is a developing story. Stay with tampabay.com for updates.
