Dry spell to end as cool front, showers move into Tampa Bay region

Our long stretch of dry weather is over.

A cold front from the north moved into the Tampa Bay region Monday and forecasters say it will dump rain on our parched lawns for the next couple days.

"We could have several rounds of rain,'' said Mike Clay, chief meteorologist with Bay News 9.

It couldn't come soon enough.

Last month was among the driest Novembers in history, Clay said.

The Tampa Bay region saw only a trace of rain in November, and December was headed in the same direction.

Most of the year Tampa Bay's tropical climate is influenced primarily by easterly winds.

As winter approaches, however, cold fronts are able to penetrate further south, collecting moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and increasing the chances of thunderstorms.

Forecasters predict up to a 60 percent chance of rain today and Wednesday.

"It looks like the cold front may stay together enough to create significant rainfall up and down the I-4 corridor,'' said Robert Garcia, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Ruskin.

After the front passes through it will bring in cooler, drier air, with high temperatures in the low to mid 70s.
