Hurricane season ends on a quiet note

The tropics are quiet as another hurricane season drew to a close Friday.

Although millions in New York and New Jersey are still recuperating from Hurricane Sandy's assault on the Northeast, the Sunshine State was spared again.

It's been a record seven years since a hurricane hit Florida.

National Hurricane Center forecasters, who had predicted 12 to 17 named storms this season, noted that most of the 19 storms avoided the United States altogether.

The only major hurricane of the season, Michael, spiraled out to sea, and just two of 10 hurricanes hit the United States.

The two, Isaac and Sandy, caused significant damage in Louisiana and along the Northeast coast, respectively.

In total, the season had 19 named storms, seven more than average; 10 hurricanes, four more than average; and only one major hurricane, as opposed to the usual three.
