Tropical Storm Dorian weakens, still spinning across Atlantic

Tropical Storm Dorian is weakening as it spins across the Atlantic Ocean, the National Hurricane Center said Friday morning.

The storm is more disorganized than it was previously, and it is located 1,295 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, according to the hurricane center. Wind speeds are about 50 miles per hour, and the system is moving west-northwest at 21 miles per hour.

Forecasters said it will likely turn harder to the west in coming days.

Prediction models show Dorian approaching the Bahamas by about Wednesday of next week. The storm developed off the west African coast near the Cape Verde Islands.

Bay News 9 meteorologist Juli Marquez said increased wind shear and drier air are factors in Dorian's weakening.

"The question mark is how it's going to interact with this the next couple of days," she said.

The storm is still far offshore, and it could regain strength or continue to diminish as it moves west.

Look for more updates on Dorian's movement over the weekend.
