Keep tots in mind during Black Friday shopping

As you polish off the turkey this Thanksgiving Day and maybe even debark on a Black Friday shopping expedition this evening or tomorrow, perhaps you can keep Dec. 1 in mind.

On that Saturday, Toys for Tots and our fine partners at the U.S. Postal Service will conduct our annual Post Office Letter Carriers Toy Drive. To participate, leave a new unwrapped toy near your mail box and your letter carrier will collect the toys and transport them back to us.

This is an important day for both our Pasco County Toys for Tots programs. Each year, we collect half of all the toys we need to serve 9,000 deserving children via the letter carriers toy drive.

At this time of the year there will be many fine charities seeking our community's assistance. Our program, however, asks not for money, but for your caring assistance and active support. We believe that as you purchase a toy or a book for a child you will, for a few cherished moments, feel like a kid again yourself. And we are sure that you'll fully enjoy that lustrous feeling.

We work closely with the school system to insure that we select deserving families to receive your caring Christmas gifts. Many of our honored volunteers will act as our Toys for Tots elves, and will assist our registered families in selecting an appropriate presents for their tots. Again this year, we will hold five local toy distributions near the homes or residents of our selected families.

In east Pasco, we will hold toy distributions in Dade City, Zephyrhills, Wesley Chapel and Land O' Lakes. Additionally, we also hold a special toy distribution for the Lacoochee families in need. Here we hope to serve over 4,500 children. On the west side of the county, two toy distributions are planned, Dec. 15 in Hudson and Dec. 22 in New Port Richey. Those, too, will provide a most Merry Christmas for more than 4,500 children.

On Christmas Day, thanks to your kindness, many children will be thrilled when they open their new gifts. Your kindheartedness will help make their holiday a truly magical Christmas morning memory.

Bob Loring is head of Toys for Tots in east Pasco.
