Monday's letters: The Trumps' transparency

Russian help welcomed | July 12

The Trumps' transparency

President Donald Trump's recent praise of his son, Donald Trump Jr., for his transparency was heartwarming. The basis for this well-earned recognition is Donald Jr.'s public release of the emails that confirmed a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower where Russia offered to help the Trump campaign with information damaging to the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Of course, the release of the emails came just hours before the New York Times was set to release them anyway. Nonetheless, I can finally agree with the president on something. Donald Jr., like his father the president, is extremely transparent. As in, "easily seen through."

Dubious claims

This column recounted the president laying out his successes in office. Among them he cited: a record stock market, low unemployment and success against ISIS. His inference was that his actions and policies have been responsible for these successes.

There has not, however, been any passing of tax reform or other measures to bring about such successes. They have taken place under the set of laws and policies that existed when he took office — the "disastrous" ones he inherited from President Barack Obama. The reality is that he is the beneficiary of the very policies he wants to dismantle.

Rental car firms settle on tolls July 12

Toll problem remains

It is good to see that Pam Bondi's office addressed and settled the rental car companies' deceptive practice of hiding the true cost for toll transponders and toll fees. The settlement still does not address the fundamental problem: There is no way for people driving rental cars to pay their tolls without excessive fees. The advent of all-electronic tolling will only cause this problem to worsen.

Activists ruffle feathers at Chick-fil-A | July 14

Dig a little deeper

While I think this group got everything it wanted with this page-one Times story, I believe that while you have them on the hook (no pun intended) your ever-inquisitive reporters should do a follow-up.

What is this group's position on abortion? Do they only feel an obligation to protect chickens and fish?

You opened this can on worms by making the issue page-one news. Let's dig a little more.
