Sprint driver, Tampa resident David Steele dies in race crash at Desoto Speedway

BRADENTON — Sprint car driver David Steele was killed in a crash during a race Saturday at Desoto Speedway. Steele, an Indianapolis native who lived in Tampa, was 42.

A YouTube video showed Steele's car trying to make a pass going into Turn 1. The car's left front wheel struck the right rear of the car in front of him, causing Steele's car to go airborne, spin 180 degrees and hit the outside retaining wall driver's-side first, a Manatee County Sheriff's Office report said. Medics attempted to treat Steele, but he was pronounced dead.

Steele won the U.S. Auto Club Silver Crown Series in 2004 and 2005. He recently won a record 100th event in Florida and held numerous records at the .375-mile asphalt oval. The track released a statement on Facebook: "Desoto Speedway owners and staff are saddened by tonight's passing of David Steele in the Sprint Car feature. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this time."

NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne tweeted that Steele was "one of the best and such a good guy to hang out and have a beer with."

Steele is survived by his wife, Lynn Bunn Steele, and three young children, the Bradenton Herald reported.
