1. The grim irony of the day arrived in the form of USF running back Trevon Sands. The sophomore was rewarded with a start in the backfield, presumably for his stellar work on special teams. So what happens? Sands is whistled for two special-teams personal fouls (including roughing the punter), both of which lead to East Carolina touchdowns.

2. When national awards are doled out in December, Quinton Flowers may not be the lone Bull in the discussions. Nine days after setting an American Athletic Conference record with a 5-of-5 field goal performance against Temple, senior place-kicker Emilio Nadelman converted two more (28, 37 yards) on Saturday. Subtract a blocked chip shot against Illinois, and Nadelman is 10-of-10 this season with two 44-yarders.

3. We pause for a bit of perspective here: Entering Saturday evening, the combined record of USF's first four Division I-A opponents was 6-13. Its next three (Cincinnati, Tulane, Houston) were 7-5 (entering Cincinnati's night game against Marshall). For all of their dominance to this point, the Bulls' true formidability has yet to be gauged.
