Florida halts USF baseball win streak at 12

GAINESVILLE — A combined 10 runs in two innings helped Florida put an end to USF's 12-game winning streak

The Gators (23-19) scored six in the fifth and added four in the sixth en route to a 12-1 victory over USF on Tuesday night at McKethan Stadium. The victory halted USF's longest winning streak in 16 years.

"They played better than us tonight. They pitched better, they hit better than us, they were just the better team," USF baseball coach Lelo Prado said.

Freshman Richie Martin, a former Bloomingdale High standout, led Florida, going 2-for-5 with four RBIs, including a bases-loaded triple in the sixth.

USF (26-15) took a 1-0 lead in the second on a single by Anthony Diaz. For four innings, Bulls pitcher Mike Clarkson kept the Gators in check. But when he left after 4⅓ innings with two on base, having given up a run on a wild pitch, things fell apart.

The Gators finished with 13 hits and 11 RBIs while giving up just six hits.

More baseball: Chris Hanson hit a three-run homer and Nick Hill struck out seven to lead Eckerd (15-27) over host Warner 6-3.

From BCS to College Football Playoff

PASADENA, Calif. — The Bowl Championship Series will be replaced by the College Football Playoff.

The BCS conference commissioners, during the first of three days of meetings, announced the name of the new postseason system that starts in 2014.

They also will choose this week the remaining three sites for the six-bowl semifinal rotation in the new system and the site of the first championship game, to be held Jan. 12, 2015.

ESPN reported late Tuesday that Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will be awarded the title game, beating out Raymond James Stadium. The announcement is expected today.

"It's really simple. It gets right to the point," BCS executive director Bill Hancock, who will hold the same position in the playoff system, said of the new name. "We decided it would be best to call it what it is."

The new postseason format will create two national semifinals to be played New Year's Eve or New Year's Day with the winners advancing. The six bowls in the playoff rotation will host marquee, BCS-type games on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day during the seasons they do not host a semifinal.

Three semifinal spots have already been decided: the Rose, Orange and Sugar bowls. Four other bowls have bid for the final three spots. The clear front-runners are the Cotton, Chick-fil-A and Fiesta.

SAILING: The Eckerd women's team has advanced to the national championship, which will be held May 21-22 in St. Petersburg.

TAMPA — The playbook was pretty simple at Tampa Bay Tech. Snap the ball to quarterback Michael Penix and let him throw all over the field.
