Captain's Corner: Mild water temperatures bringing plenty of surprises offshore

May can be one of the best months to fish offshore. The water is still mild, allowing spring and early summer migrations to mix. We landing numerous kingfish during our past few trips, along with a few surprises. A large sailfish grabbed our bait intended for kingfish. This billfish can stay out of the water more than in during the first minute of battle. Scattered reports of sails being hooked came from up and down the coast the past two weeks. Blackfin tuna have been another great bi-catch. Numerous reports of these strong fighters have been popping up. Waters of 70 feet-plus seem to be where they've been found. This month is also one of the more active for local anglers to get lucky with a tuna hook-up. Like sailfish, it's hard to target tuna since they are often on the move searching for food. Often you will spot flying fish in large numbers when tuna show up. They also can be found under commercial shrimp boats. If you find one anchored, it's a good idea to toss a few baits close to the boat.
