Captains Corner: Reds plentiful but still wary in clear water

What's hot: This has been the best week for redfish this year, and next week should be better. The best bite has been on the higher parts of a rising tide.

Tips: With the water still relatively clear, keeping as far away from the reds and scaling down tackle have been key. Try either a free-lined rig or under a cork, both rigged with 10-15-pound fluorocarbon leader and size 1 or 1/0 circle hook. Nose-hooked sardines have produced, but a pinfish with clipped fins has helped coax larger, overslot redfish. Birds are usually a good sign and an indicator of predatory fish. Unfortunately, they've been nothing but pests lately. I've had more success not chumming. The birds have been more aggressive eating our chummers. The bigger problem is their presence. Redfish and fish have been programmed from birth to view birds as predators.

    Colleges

SUNRISE — Marcquise Reed threw a 75-foot pass to Elijah Thomas for a dunk that put Clemson ahead to stay with 37 seconds left, and the Tigers rallied from a 12-point deficit in the second half Saturday to beat No. 22 Florida 71-69 in the Orange Bowl Classic.

  5. Lightning journal: No easy answers on replacing injured Ryan Callahan

    Lightning Strikes

The good news for the Lightning is that GM Steve Yzerman is hopeful RW Ryan Callahan will be ready to go in 3-4 weeks when his upper body injury is re-evaluated.
