With more than half the state still without power, here are five places to escape the primitive environs of a powerless house and find some sweet, chilly air.

Malls

Most of the malls have opened their doors. Tyrone Square, International Plaza, University Mall, Westfield Citrus Park and the Shops at Wiregrass have resumed normal operating hours. Countryside Mall and Westfield Brandon finally opened on Wednesday, though some store hours may vary.

Movie theaters

Theaters that have power and opened Tuesday include AMC Sundial in downtown St. Petersburg, Cobb theater at Tyrone Square Mall in St. Petersburg, Hyde Park Cine Bistro in Tampa, Grove 16 in Wesley Chapel, the Lakeside 18 in Lakeland and Cine Bistro on Siesta Key in Sarasota. Regal Park Place in Pinellas Park reopened Wednesday.

Bookstores

Haslam's Book Store, 2025 Central Ave. in St. Petersburg, is open and offering customers a charging station for their phones. They are open from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Inkwood Books in Tampa, at 216 S Armenia Ave., is open form 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

YMCA

Most Tampa area YMCAs opened Tuesday morning. You can find a list of locations at tampaymca.org/locations.

Museums and attractions

Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando theme parks are open. The Salvador Dalí Museum and the Tampa Museum of Art will reopen today. The Glazer Children's Museum opens today and will offer $7 admission for the rest of September. The Henry Plant Museum in Tampa, the St. Petersburg Museum of History and the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg will reopen Thursday. Lowry Park Zoo plans to open at 9:30 a.m. today. Busch Gardens and SeaWorld will reopen today.

  1. Healthful eating is just a one-pan fish dish away

    Cooking

I recoil at the repentant food chatter that crops up this time of year, dominated by words such as "cleanse" and "detox," which, from what I can tell, are just modern code for "extreme diet." But part of cultivating a healthy, balanced life is recognizing when you have been pushing the edges in one direction and then …

  2. 'Fire and Fury' burns up bestseller lists

    Books

When author Michael Wolff was interviewed on the Today show about his book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, Savannah Guthrie asked him how he felt about President Donald Trump's attacks on it. Wolff responded, "Where do I send the box of chocolates?"

  3. We tried eating the recommended serving of fruit and vegetables for a week, and it was harder than we thought

    Cooking

I sat at my desk eating chunked pineapple straight out of the can, reading about how much fruit and vegetables we should all be eating every day: 1 1/2 to two cups of fruit, 2 1/2 to three cups of vegetables, at a minimum, per the United States Department of Agriculture. But only a small portion of us are working that …

  4. Steve Martin and Martin Short talk touring together and 'newfangled old-fashioned' variety show

    Stage

It's barely been a year since Steve Martin and Martin Short last brought their roadshow to town. But there was never a doubt in their minds they'd be back.

  5. Tampa Rep's 'Gnit' is a sharp commentary on narcissism in the age of selfies

    Stage

TAMPA — Tampa Repertory Theatre's Gnit strikes gold for theatergoers who appreciate deadpan wit, clever wordplay and incisive commentary on the human condition.
