Beer Week: Too chilly, even for Cold Storage crowd

As the temperature dipped, so did the crowd at the Seminole Heights Saturday Social at Cold Storage Craft Brewery in Tampa. Some took refuge inside the warm and comfy vibe of the tasting room, which offered five of its own brews (Florida Avenue Blueberry, Florida Avenue Ale, Florida Avenue IPA, Copperhead Amber Ale and Betchy Brown Ale) alongside other guest beers. Or some didn't come out because of the frigid Florida weather. But for the lone food truck, keg of Florida Avenue Ale, and three bands outside in the adjacent parking lot, the social went on.

Less than a dozen people scattered sparsely around bare picnic tables to watch indie duo Bootleggers and Baptists, female-fronted Sweet Oblique and funky jam band Displace. Temps were so chilly, only a few opted for cold cups of the award-winning brews, including Sweet Oblique's singer who kept complimenting "the wonderful beer."

As the melodies resonated in echoes against the cold concrete, an overheard conversation by the last few standing framed it perfectly — it was a shame everyone else was missing this.

TARPON SPRINGS — The soprano sang an aria from The Marriage of Figaro about lost love, but she could have been asking the devil not to steal her soul. A couple dozen opera fans watched, including a silver-haired man with leonine features leaning back in his chair.
