Beer Week: Cold Storage wins 3 golds at Florida Brewers Guild

The tasting room at Cold Storage was just starting to fill Saturday evening when Marty Aho walked in with medals around his neck.

The 2-year-old Tampa brewery brought home three gold medals at the Florida Brewers Guild competition Saturday afternoon for their blueberry ale, brown ale and India pale ale.

It was a big deal for a brewery that has made its name creating drinkable, beach-worthy beers.

"It's cool," said Aho, the distribution representative. "All the local breweries were there."

Cold Storage, on Florida Avenue, has marketed itself for the masses, and created a niche in that regard. They've never been the super-experimental type, like Cigar City, which regularly wins awards for its unique beers.

"We brew beers for the heat and humidity," Aho said. "We're trying to reach the masses."

The brewery plans to expand sales to Fort Lauderdale, Gainesville, St. Augustine and the Peace River area soon, he said.

But on Saturday night, they enjoyed their wins.
