'Filly Brown' leads Gasparilla International Film Festival winners

Filly Brown, the story of an aspiring L.A. hip-hop artist, won two grand jury awards on Sunday's closing day at the Gasparilla International Film Festival. The drama was voted best narrative feature, along with a special acting prize for its star Gina Rodriguez, who rapped part of her acceptance speech. Other jury honorees included GLOW: The Glorious Women of Wrestling (documentary) and Elias Mael's Against the Grain (first feature). Audience awards were presented to Lawrence Feeney's feature Pharmboy, a coming-of-age drama produced in Pasco County, and Poster Boys: Or the Art of Mobile Recording, a music documentary directed by Patrick Burke. The Fix was voted the festival's most popular short film, no doubt helped by a supportive appearance at the festival by actor Colin Farrell. Breaking Up with Rosie, produced in Sarasota, was named best Florida production. Actor Blake Berris of Meth Head was presented the festival's Rising Star award. — Steve Persall, Times movie critic
