  1. Hey, Disney: 9 Bollywood actresses who could play Jasmine

    Blog

News broke this week that Disney is having a hard time casting the stars of its live action Aladdin. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the studio and director Guy Ritchie (yes, here is your reminder that the guy recently behind the disastrous King Arthur movie has been entrusted with a Disney classic) have been searching for "a male lead in his 20s who can act and sing ... of Middle-Eastern or Indian descent." Reportedly the obvious names of Brits Dev Patel and Riz Ahmed are among those considered for the role. But still, in months of casting call tests, no one has been chosen. I had a few suggestions from Bollywood....

  3. 12 more period dramas you should be watching from around the world

    Blog

If you've loved period dramas for any length of time, you've probably seen them all.

Not that there's a shortage of shows dramatizing any and everything from the 1600s to the '60s. But you have your stalwart producers in the U.K. and your faithful Masterpiece on PBS distributing those wares in the United States. You've seen your Poldarks and your Indian Summers and your Downtons. Maybe you've seen all 12 of my other period shows you should be watching, even the ones you have to get on DVD from a library near you....

  4. 7 fabulous period dramas about fashion you should watch for glamorous costumes

    Blog

As everyone knows, the best part of most if not all period dramas is the costumes — which is why we also call them costume dramas.

One of the this we love most about the re-creation of any number of bygone eras is the glamor they held, real or imagined.

But period dramas about fashion? Those reach a whole new height.

Here are seven period dramas that bring all the glamor....

  5. 'Star Trek: Discovery' has another new premiere date and airing schedule

    Blog

CBS's repeatedly delayed new Star Trek series has another premiere date.

Star Trek: Discovery will premiere at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 24 (a Sunday) after an NFL game and 60 Minutes, the franchise announced today. The show was originally announced in late 2015 and set to premiere earlier this year. It was then pushed back several times — most recently it was rumored to premiere this summer — and original showrunner Bryan Fuller stepped back due to scheduling conflicts....

  6. 9 TV shows set in Florida but not Miami, like 'Claws' in Manatee County

    The Feed

The ladies of Manatee County are coming to a TV screen near you this weekend.

No, it's not Real Housewives of Bradenton or some other reality show spinoff. On Sunday, TNT debuts Claws, about a money-laundering scheme in a Manatee County nail salon. Read more about it here, but I'm sure you're already asking, "Why Manatee County?"...

  8. Well, yes, Netflix's new 'Anne With an E' (of Green Gables) is ... different

    Blog

Let's get this out of the way: Netflix's new adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, puzzlingly called Anne With an E, is not like the Annes you've seen before.

The latest version of Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1908 book, releasing seven episodes Friday on Netflix after airing on Canada's CBC, comes from Moira Walley-Beckett, a writer for Breaking Bad who won an Emmy for penning "Ozymandias." And if you are the kind of person who reads "Breaking Bad + Anne of Green Gables" and thinks ‘YES,' this series is for you....

Anne With an E on Netflix stars Amybeth McNulty as the titular character.
  9. So, how Irish are you? Tell a family story this St. Patrick's Day

    Pop Culture

    How Irish are you?

The answer this week is probably "very," especially if you enjoy green beer and outrageous amounts of corned beef and cabbage. But it's also possible you're a good bit Irish year-round, given that Irish is the second most common ancestry among Americans, according to the Census Bureau. (Edging it out at No. 1 is German, which you might've guessed in Oktober. We Americans do like to claim some heritage, especially when it involves beer.)...

  10. Column: Come one, come all geeks to 'Game of Thrones' orchestra performance

    Music & Concerts

I wouldn't consider myself an orchestra fan, but I would call myself a geek.

Last year, I went to a concert experience called Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage at Ruth Eckerd Hall. It was a lot less theatrical than the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience at Amalie Arena this weekend sounds like it will be (pyrotechnics!), but the premise is the same. It featured a live orchestra playing the music of Star Trek while videos of the franchise's iconic moments played on a screen. ...

  11. Review: Amazon's 'The Collection' lacking refinement in story and fashion design

    The Feed

Paris, 1947. The Nazis are gone and folks want to make Parisian fashion great again.

It sounds like the perfect setting for a haute couture period drama.

Sadly, Amazon's The Collection fails to follow through on its potential and promise, delivering a patch job far from cohesive and often uninspired.

At the center is Paul Sabine (Richard Coyle, whom you may recognize though you won't know from where), who heads up the family fashion house and signs a deal to revitalize Paris fashion after the Nazi occupation. Behind the scenes, the real creative force is his brother, Claude (Tom Riley, Da Vinci's Demons), hiding perhaps because he's gay but more likely because he's a hot mess, dreaming up fashions sporadically and apparently mostly while drunk or high. Lording over them both with a perpetually displeased look is mother Yvette (Frances de la Tour)....

  12. Column: A few German terms to get you through Oktoberfest

    Events

Can you believe it's already October? I probably say this every year, but it feels like the first three-quarters of 2016 have gone by in a blink, and Christmas will be here before you know it. The music has already begun in some places.

Maybe the weather will catch up soon, but in the meantime October brings that great salute to beer known as Oktoberfest. We've scoped out more than a dozen Oktoberfest events....

  13. Four Tampa Bay coffee shops are turning into Luke's Diner from 'Gilmore Girls' on Wednesday

    Blog

Rejoice, Gilmore Girls fans who love coffee almost as much as Lorelai.

Netflix is turning 250 diners around the country into Luke's Diner and offering FREE COFFEE on Wednesday in anticipation of the series' four-episode revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, coming next month.

A promotional website, townofstarshollow.org (which hilariously says "Last updated May 2007," when the show went off the air), says Tampa's two Blind Tiger Cafe locations (1901 E Seventh Ave., 6500 N Florida Ave.) and Temple Terrace's Felicitous Coffee & Tea House (11706 N 51st St.) will be transformed. A fourth location, the Lab (1703 W State St, Tampa) was added Tuesday. (Woe to us Gilmore girls in St. Pete.)...

If this place comes with a Luke, we're so in.
  14. George Clooney found out about the Brangelina breakup from CNN and other sad reactions (w/video)

    Blog

Most of the reaction to the news that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are splitting up has been funny, sassy, a little gleeful. (Click here for some faves.) But of course not everyone is in the mood to joke about it.

On a sadder note, here are some less gleeful reactions, including George Clooney being informed by CNN and Chrissy Teigen and Adele keepin' it real....

Sad Brangelina are sad. (But really, this is from their 2015 movie By the Sea.)
